White Lion afternoon tea

Anyone for Afternoon Tea?
Date: 18.09.2017
We love tea and cake in the afternoon, and at the White Lion we have some delicious themed afternoon teas coming up over the coming months (we can’t wait for our ‘Confessions of a chocoholic’ afternoon tea!). But have you ever wondered how afternoon tea started?

Afternoon teas are thought to have been started in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford in 1840. In those days evening meals in well-to-do houses would be served at around 8pm so the Duchess was prone to being rather peckish by 4 in the afternoon.

Needing a snack to fill the hunger gap, the Duchess requested a tray of tea, sandwiches and cake to be brought to her, which she enjoyed during the afternoon. This became something she would regularly partake of and later became fashionable among her friends.

We’re so glad the Duchess started this trend! At the White Lion Hotel we have monthly themed afternoon teas for you to indulge in.

By far our most popular themed afternoon tea is our ‘Confessions of a chocoholic’ a chocolate themed tea which will be available throughout October.

Available 1st to 30th October daily from 3pm – 5pm. £15 per person
Add a glass of prosecco for £21.50 per person
